Visiting the Deshaies Botanical Garden: Our Review, Visit Time and Prices

While planning our itinerary in Guadeloupe, I had mostly noticed the Valombreuse Botanical Garden, because it’s the one everyone talks about the most!

But my friend Aurélie, who is already on her third trip to the island, instead recommended the Deshaies Botanical Garden. So I followed her advice… And we loved it!

I was expecting a “nice but quick” visit, and in the end it turned out to be a real tropical escape: lush vegetation, animals, waterfalls, and beautiful viewpoints over the sea. And a lovely surprise too—shall I take you along?

Deshaies Botanical Garden at a Glance

Why Visit the Deshaies Botanical Garden?

Located in the hills above Deshaies, on Basse-Terre, this tropical garden is set on the former estate of French comedian Coluche and was designed by landscape architect Michel Gaillard. Today transformed into a huge landscaped park of about 5 hectares, it attracts nature-loving travelers, families, and photography enthusiasts alike.

What we especially loved here was the atmosphere. Unlike some very “touristy” activities in Guadeloupe, the visit remains calm and relaxing. You stroll peacefully among palm trees, exotic flowers, artificial waterfalls, and viewpoints over the Caribbean Sea.

It’s also an excellent activity if you want a change from the beaches. After several days of swimming, snorkeling, or hiking, the Botanical Garden offers a quieter break that’s accessible to everyone.

Another advantage: the park is very pleasant even when the weather is a little uncertain. In Guadeloupe, tropical showers are common, especially on Basse-Terre. This kind of visit therefore works perfectly on a cloudier day.

What to See in the Deshaies Botanical Garden?

The route is very well laid out and lets you discover the different areas of the garden at your own pace. Even if you’re not passionate about botany, the visit is truly enjoyable thanks to the variety of landscapes and animals found on site.

Tropical Plants and Exotic Flowers

The garden brings together more than 1,000 tropical species from all over the world. Of course, you’ll find plenty of palm trees, but also hibiscus, bougainvillea, orchids, and huge tropical trees.

The colors are incredible, especially when the sun starts to come out after a light tropical shower. Everything looks even greener, denser, almost unreal at times.

Even if you know absolutely nothing about plants, the walk remains immersive. You quickly find yourself surrounded by lush vegetation, with the feeling of being plunged into a perfectly maintained tropical jungle.

The Animals in the Park

One of the garden’s biggest highlights is also the animals found throughout the route.

The flamingos obviously attract attention right away, but you can also see parrots, colorful lorikeets, and huge koi carp in the ponds.

The lorikeet area is often one of visitors’ favorite moments. The birds easily come and perch nearby, which makes for some very pretty photos.

Overall, the park is very family-friendly with children thanks to this slightly playful aspect throughout the visit. In fact, right at the entrance, you can buy 3 small containers for the lorikeets, goats, and carp—guaranteed success with kids!

The garden also offers Explor’Games, a fun adventure game to play along the route. We didn’t try it, but it’s worth a look if you’re visiting with children.

Waterfalls, Ponds, and Viewpoints

The garden is built on the heights of Deshaies, which offers several beautiful panoramas over the sea and the surrounding vegetation.

The route alternates between small paths, ponds, bridges, artificial waterfalls, and more open areas with views of the coast. The whole layout is really well designed and very pleasant to explore.

This is also what makes the place particularly photogenic. There are photo spots at practically every turn.

How Long Does It Take to Visit the Deshaies Botanical Garden?

Plan on 1.5 to 2 hours to explore the Deshaies Botanical Garden at a relaxed pace. That’s the visit duration given by the official website, and it matches the time most visitors spend on site.

How long you stay mainly depends on how you like to visit:

• a quick visit can be done in a little over an hour;
• with children, who will want to feed the lorikeets, goats and carp, allow closer to 2 hours, or even a bit more;
• if you love taking photos or have lunch at the garden restaurant, you can easily spend half a day there.

Good to know: last admission is at 4:30 pm and the park closes at 5:30 pm. To enjoy your two hours without rushing, it’s best to arrive before 3:30 pm.

The route remains relatively accessible, even though there are a few sloping sections since the garden is built on a hillside. Still, it’s better to bring comfortable shoes, especially after rain.

Where to Eat at the Deshaies Botanical Garden?

If you plan to visit the Deshaies Botanical Garden in the morning or around lunchtime, good news: several dining options are available on site.

The site has a panoramic restaurant offering a beautiful view of the sea and the surrounding tropical vegetation. It’s the ideal place to take your time over a meal in a particularly pleasant setting. It’s open every day from 12:00 pm to 2:30 pm.

But if, like us, you’re looking for something simpler and quicker, you’ll also find a snack bar within the garden, Le Manguier, open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. We chose this option and were not disappointed. On the menu: bokits, mixed salads, sandwiches, cold drinks, and ice cream. A perfect way to refuel after the visit without spending two hours at the table.

👉 Quick tip: if you visit the garden in the middle of the day, planning lunch on site is an excellent idea. It allows you to enjoy the place at a more relaxed pace without having to get back in the car right away.

Deshaies Botanical Garden Tickets, Prices and Opening Hours

The Deshaies Botanical Garden is open year-round, every day, including public holidays. Admission is from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm and the park closes at 5:30 pm. Free parking is available at the entrance.

The price may seem a little high at first glance for a botanical garden, especially as a family: expect to pay €60 for two adults and two children aged 5 to 12, not including the small cups of animal food. But honestly, the park’s maintenance is impressive and the experience remains truly enjoyable, especially if you like very visual places.

Where to Buy Tickets

You can buy your tickets directly at the entrance ticket office, or online on the official ticketing site. Buying online means you already have your ticket before you arrive, which is handy in high season.

If you’re traveling with several families, note that the group rate applies from 20 people and requires a single payment: separate payments per family aren’t eligible.

The garden also hosts night-time visits on some weekends depending on the time of year (€15 per adult and €10 per child in 2026). Dates are listed on the official website.

Our Tips for the Visit

• visit in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat
• bring water
• wear comfortable shoes
• take your camera or make sure your phone has enough battery
• avoid the busiest times if possible

The garden remains very accessible and is suitable for couples, families, and older travelers alike. There’s also a reduced rate for visitors with reduced mobility.

Our Opinion on the Deshaies Botanical Garden

A visit to the Deshaies Botanical Garden is really worth it!

Of course, it’s not an “adventure” activity or an absolute must-do like a hike to La Soufrière or a trip to Les Saintes. But the place brings something different to the trip.

It’s a calm, restful, very aesthetic visit that’s easy to add to an itinerary on Basse-Terre.

It’s also the kind of place where you leave with tons of photos. Between the tropical flowers, birds, ponds, and panoramas over the sea, it’s hard not to fill up your photo gallery in just a few minutes.

What We Loved

• a beautifully maintained garden, with color everywhere
• being able to feed the lorikeets, goats and carp, a big hit with kids
• the viewpoints over the Caribbean Sea
• the snack bar and restaurant on site, handy for combining the visit with lunch
• a good option when the weather is uncertain

The Downsides

• a budget that adds up quickly for families
• a few sloping sections, worth keeping in mind with a stroller or tired legs
• strong heat in the middle of the day
• a highly landscaped garden: if you’re after wild nature, go for a rainforest hike instead

If you like tropical gardens, photography, lush atmospheres, or simply quieter activities, you should clearly enjoy the visit.

What to Do Around the Deshaies Botanical Garden?

The Deshaies area is one of the most pleasant to explore on Basse-Terre, and it would be a shame to visit the garden without enjoying the surroundings.

After your visit, you can easily continue the day with:

• Grande Anse Beach, probably one of the most beautiful beaches in Guadeloupe
• a stroll through the village of Deshaies
• a snorkeling or diving trip near the Cousteau Reserve
• the Route de la Traversée
• Malendure Beach
• the waterfalls and hikes of Basse-Terre.

The Deshaies Botanical Garden was clearly a lovely surprise. It’s not the most “spectacular” activity of the trip, but it’s probably one of the most enjoyable if you like tropical atmospheres, beautiful places, and peaceful walks.

You come here to wander, watch the animals, take photos, and enjoy a truly soothing setting. And honestly, it feels good to slow down a little between two beaches or hikes.

A simple, beautiful, and very photogenic break — exactly the kind of visit you won’t regret adding to your plans.
