Located in the hills above Deshaies, on Basse-Terre, this tropical garden is set on a former property that once belonged to Coluche. Today transformed into a huge landscaped park, it attracts nature-loving travelers, families, and photography enthusiasts alike.
What we especially loved here was the atmosphere. Unlike some very “touristy” activities in Guadeloupe, the visit remains calm and relaxing. You stroll peacefully among palm trees, exotic flowers, artificial waterfalls, and viewpoints over the Caribbean Sea.
It’s also an excellent activity if you want a change from the beaches. After several days of swimming, snorkeling, or hiking, the Botanical Garden offers a quieter break that’s accessible to everyone.
Another advantage: the park is very pleasant even when the weather is a little uncertain. In Guadeloupe, tropical showers are common, especially on Basse-Terre. This kind of visit therefore works perfectly on a cloudier day.
What to See in the Deshaies Botanical Garden?
The route is very well laid out and lets you discover the different areas of the garden at your own pace. Even if you’re not passionate about botany, the visit is truly enjoyable thanks to the variety of landscapes and animals found on site.
Tropical Plants and Exotic Flowers
The garden brings together hundreds of tropical species from all over the world. Of course, you’ll find plenty of palm trees, but also hibiscus, bougainvillea, orchids, and huge tropical trees.
The colors are incredible, especially when the sun starts to come out after a light tropical shower. Everything looks even greener, denser, almost unreal at times.
Even if you know absolutely nothing about plants, the walk remains immersive. You quickly find yourself surrounded by lush vegetation, with the feeling of being plunged into a perfectly maintained tropical jungle.
The Animals in the Park
One of the garden’s biggest highlights is also the animals found throughout the route.
The flamingos obviously attract attention right away, but you can also see parrots, colorful lorikeets, and huge koi carp in the ponds.
The lorikeet area is often one of visitors’ favorite moments. The birds easily come and perch nearby, which makes for some very pretty photos.
Overall, the park is very family-friendly with children thanks to this slightly playful aspect throughout the visit. In fact, right at the entrance, you can buy 3 small containers for the lorikeets, goats, and carp—guaranteed success with kids!
Waterfalls, Ponds, and Viewpoints
The garden is built on the heights of Deshaies, which offers several beautiful panoramas over the sea and the surrounding vegetation.
The route alternates between small paths, ponds, bridges, artificial waterfalls, and more open areas with views of the coast. The whole layout is really well designed and very pleasant to explore.
This is also what makes the place particularly photogenic. There are photo spots at practically every turn.

Most visitors spend between 1.5 and 2 hours on site, but honestly, it depends a lot on your pace.
If you like taking photos, watching the animals, or simply enjoying the setting, you can easily spend half a day there, especially if you have lunch afterward at the garden restaurant.
On the other hand, a quicker visit can be done in a little over an hour.
The route remains relatively accessible, even though there are a few sloping sections since the garden is built on a hillside. Still, it’s better to bring comfortable shoes, especially after rain.

If you plan to visit the Deshaies Botanical Garden in the morning or around lunchtime, good news: several dining options are available on site.
The site has a panoramic restaurant offering a beautiful view of the sea and the surrounding tropical vegetation. It’s the ideal place to take your time over a meal in a particularly pleasant setting.
But if, like us, you’re looking for something simpler and quicker, you’ll also find a snack bar within the garden. We chose this option and were not disappointed. On the menu: bokits, mixed salads, sandwiches, cold drinks, and ice cream. A perfect way to refuel after the visit without spending two hours at the table.
👉 Quick tip: if you visit the garden in the middle of the day, planning lunch on site is an excellent idea. It allows you to enjoy the place at a more relaxed pace without having to get back in the car right away.

A visit to the Deshaies Botanical Garden is really worth it!
Of course, it’s not an “adventure” activity or an absolute must-do like a hike to La Soufrière or a trip to Les Saintes. But the place brings something different to the trip.
It’s a calm, restful, very aesthetic visit that’s easy to add to an itinerary on Basse-Terre.
It’s also the kind of place where you leave with tons of photos. Between the tropical flowers, birds, ponds, and panoramas over the sea, it’s hard not to fill up your photo gallery in just a few minutes.
If you like tropical gardens, photography, lush atmospheres, or simply quieter activities, you should clearly enjoy the visit.
And to finish, it’s a great visit to do with children!
