Pointe des Châteaux is one of the most spectacular natural sites in Guadeloupe, located at the far eastern end of Grande-Terre and offering impressive cliffs facing the Atlantic Ocean.
When we arrived at 8:20 a.m., the parking lot was still empty. There was hardly anyone there, and the place seemed almost asleep. We started the walk quietly, with our 5-year-old child. The trail is simple, accessible, and has no particular difficulty, making it an ideal family outing.
But what struck us the most was the contrast in such a short time: in less than two hours, the site filled up completely, going from a quiet place to a very busy spot. That’s when you understand that Pointe des Châteaux is a must-see in Guadeloupe, but also a site to discover at the right time to fully enjoy it.

Visiting Pointe des Châteaux: what is it?
Pointe des Châteaux is a peninsula located at the eastern end of Grande-Terre in Guadeloupe. Contrary to what its name might suggest, there are no castles here. The name actually comes from the shape of the rocks and cliffs, which, seen from afar, evoke the silhouettes of natural fortresses sculpted by the wind and the ocean.
Listed and protected, the site offers a unique landscape in Guadeloupe. Here, the cliffs plunge steeply into the Atlantic, constantly swept by powerful winds that shape the low, resilient vegetation. On a clear day, you can see the island of Désirade in the distance, and more broadly, it is even a viewpoint from which you can make out a large part of Guadeloupe as a whole, with such an open horizon.
It is a place where nature expresses itself without filters, raw and mineral, and where you immediately feel the force of the elements from the very first steps on the trail.
What to do at Pointe des Châteaux? The must-sees
Admire the sunrise (the legendary moment)
If there is one experience to have here, it is the sunrise. The light rises directly over the Atlantic Ocean, transforming the landscape into a golden setting. It is clearly THE magical moment of the site.
On our side, we’ll be honest: at the end of the trip, we had kind of lost the habit of waking up at 6 a.m… So we missed that moment. But we met several travelers who confirmed that it was absolutely worth it.
👉 If you can get up early, it is probably one of the most beautiful sunrises in Guadeloupe.
Climb up to the cross
The hike leads to a large white cross set at the top of the cliff, one of the site’s most iconic viewpoints.
Once you get to the top, the view is striking. On one side, the cliffs plunge directly into the Atlantic Ocean, battered by waves and wind. On the other, you can see the coast of Grande-Terre stretching toward the horizon, while the island of Désirade appears in the distance on a clear day.
It is a true panoramic viewpoint, ideal for getting some height and taking in all the power and raw beauty of the landscape. Looking toward certain more open stretches of coastline, it can sometimes even feel like you are facing endless, wild beaches, a bit like those you imagine in Australia, with that feeling of immense space and completely preserved nature.

Do the easy Pointe des Châteaux hike
The Pointe des Châteaux hike is probably one of the most accessible in Guadeloupe, and that is also what makes it so enjoyable.
The trail starts directly from the parking lot and gradually follows the peninsula to the large cross. Very quickly, you find yourself facing a completely open landscape overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, with the wind making itself felt from the first few meters.
There is no particular difficulty: the path is short, well marked, and you can do it at a relaxed pace with the family. We actually walked it without any problem with our 5-year-old child, simply taking the time to stop and enjoy the viewpoints.
What makes the walk interesting is not the performance, but the atmosphere. The contrast between the dry land, the cliffs, and the rough sea almost gives the impression of being in a timeless landscape.
⚠️ The only thing to watch out for: the wind can be very strong at times, especially on the exposed sections. And even though the walk is easy, it is better to avoid flip-flops to be more comfortable on the terrain.
Observe the wildlife and plant life
Even if the scenery looks dry and almost desert-like at first glance, you only need to walk a little to see that life is everywhere.
We especially came across:
- seabirds above the cliffs
- cacti and wind-resistant plants
- crabs on the rocky areas
- and even a few hermit crabs slipping between the rocks
It is a small, discreet ecosystem, but a really interesting one to observe, especially if you are traveling with children!
Take a coconut ice cream break on the way back
In the parking lot, there is a small coconut ice cream seller, already set up quite early in the morning. She was already there when we arrived, but even when we left around 10:30 a.m., it was still a little early for ice cream… 😄
With the heat rising quickly in Guadeloupe, we totally understand why she sets up early.
Swim nearby (but not on site)
Important: swimming is not possible directly at Pointe des Châteaux. The waves are powerful, the currents are dangerous, and the site is not at all secured for swimming.
👉 But good news: on the road back, several spots allow you to cool off.
The best known is probably La Douche, a natural pool where the waves crash against the rocks, creating a fairly spectacular geyser effect when the sea is rough.
It is a spot that many travelers had told us about before our departure. On our side, we’ll be honest: we found the place nice to see, but maybe a little less impressive than we expected. It should also be said that we are quite used to the power of the Atlantic Ocean in northern Portugal, so our point of comparison may have been a little biased 😄
Microlight flight over Pointe des Châteaux
While preparing our visit, we came across microlight flight offers over Pointe des Châteaux.
Honestly, it is tempting: seeing these cliffs and this point from the sky must be incredible. But for us, it was clearly out of budget at that stage of the trip.

The best time to discover Pointe des Châteaux is clearly in the morning, and even better early before 8:30 a.m., when the site is still quiet and the light is ideal.
🌅 Early in the morning: this is the most magical moment, with very few people and sometimes a spectacular sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean.
🕙 In the morning: the site starts to fill up quickly, but the visit remains pleasant if you arrive before the main crowd.
🕛 In the middle of the day: the heat becomes intense and the site is very busy, which makes the experience less enjoyable.
🌇 At the end of the day: the atmosphere becomes quieter again and the light is often very beautiful for photos.
👉 In any case, if you really want to enjoy the place in good conditions, the ideal is to arrive before 8:30 a.m.
Where to stay to visit Pointe des Châteaux?
Saint-François is the most practical option, because it is the closest town to the site and the one that allows you to get there quickly in the morning.
Sainte-Anne is a good compromise if you want to combine beaches and local atmosphere. We were based near Sainte-Anne to easily explore Grande-Terre.
Finally, Le Gosier remains a more central base for exploring all of Guadeloupe.
Where to eat nearby?
Around Pointe des Châteaux, you will mainly find a few simple and quick options, perfect after the walk: small snack stands, coconut ice cream stalls, or a few food trucks set up near the parking lot depending on the time of day.
For a real lunch break, the most practical option is to head to Saint-François, located about fifteen minutes away by car. You can easily find seaside restaurants there, more touristy places, but also a few very nice local options.
👉 Our advice: visit Pointe des Châteaux early in the morning, then follow up with lunch in Saint-François before ending the day at the beach.
